Ron Furr as Elvis
Thursday, March 24, 2005
Okay, more notes and musings from the Get Out section of the paper.
There was an add for "A Touch of Elvis" with Elvis-impersonator Ron Furr. Ron Furr has been impersonating Elvis since I was a kid. He must be 70 years old by now!
And what is up with all the Elvis stuff now? I saw a television commercial for an upcoming CBS movie on the life of Elvis.

It's All Greek For Me!
I was just reading the Post's Get Out section of today's paper (and completely procrastinating from doing my research papers) and saw that there are two new Greek places in South City. One place, Colussus, was reviewed in this edition. It got pretty good raves so I will have to see if it's lives up to these raves, as well as their signage of "the best gyro in St Louis".
Across from this review were coupons for various resaurants. One was for Aris a new Greek place on Hampton Ave. Both of these are close to job#1, so I will have to try these out.

Girl Scout Cookies
Girl Scout cookie season has come and gone here in Missouri. And I am proud to say that I did not buy one box!!! Maybe I can stick to some kind of diet.
But, I must bid a farewell to Thin Mints and Samoas. I loved you in my own special way.

Spring Break--Yahoo!
Monday, March 21, 2005
Yeah!
It's Spring Break. Of course, it's not like I have a complete week to lay around on the couch and do nothing.
My plan is to work every day this week at the library and earn 2 days of comp time. Then, I can use those two days to do my High School observation for my Intro to Classroom Teaching class.
This extra work should work in my favor as I have papers due in the next week or so in both Intro to Classroom Teaching and History of Film. I hope to have the History of Film paper on Warner Brothers and the HUAC (House Un-American Activities Committee) done by the end of the week.

School Stress
Monday, March 14, 2005
Today, I am a bit stressed about school. I have a mid-term in biology on Saturday and have two quizzes to finish before then.
In my Intro to Classroom Teaching, I am supposed to be observing at the high school level this month. I had it all setup to do North County Tech, but they nixed that because the school is in St. Louis County. Huh? Like I plan on teaching at the all-cracker high school of Ft Zumwalt West (or North, South, whatever).
It's just so myopic on the part of the Education Department at my school that they don't FORCE the students to observe at urban schools, inner-ring suburb schools AND outer-suburb schools. Even a rural school district would be a good idea. But, nooooo. Let's do everything in these plain school districts. I think they are missing the point of the class.
Well, that rant really wasn't my point. The point is that they have not yet assigned me to a school at all. Today is March 14. Spring break for my school is next week. When am I supposed to get 12 hours of observation time done between now and then. And that's assuming they call me right this minute to give me the assignment. My elementary observation starts March 30, so it has to be done before then. (BTW, my elementary observation is in St. Louis County--my only school districts I listed on our request sheet were STLCounty. So, why the big deal about the high school?)
I am at my wit's end about this. I know I will end up having to take vacation days to do this observation which totally sucks.

Intro to Fitness Center
Wednesday, March 09, 2005
Thankfully the above class only has one more session. I have liked the workouts, I just don't like having to dress so awful for school each day. Now, I need to tool around with my schedule to see when I can fit in those workouts.

Bitch!
Today, in History of Film class Hal Berry got us into an interesting discussion following viewing the Japanese Film Ran. This discussion lead to how women with power are viewed in America. The questions was asked "Why are women in positions of power considered bitches?".
As probably the only person with any substantial corporate experience in the classroom, I found their reactions great. They did point out that women and men do the same things to get into power, but a woman is considered a bitch for the same behavior that a man would receive a pat on the back. Someone also brought up how women make it worse for women, that they are there worst supporters. I have worked with women who have said "I won't work for a woman.".
As a member of the WPC (Women's Political Caucus), I see first hand the benefit of women helping women attain power, albeit in the political arena. Why can't women see that in all aspects of life?
I have had some asses for bosses, men and women. Gender hasn't affect my opinion one way or the other--either your great or your not so great. In my current jobs, I couldn't apply the "b label" to any. At the hospital, my two female bosses have the right application of "bitchiness": they use it on their departments behalf, not directed at their department.
At BABW, I think the two female supervisors could use some "bitchiness". They are such doormats and let the workers take advantage of them. That's fine, but when you drag down the other employees to be stomped on to--that's a problem.
I wondered if the difference was working outside of the corporate sector? Do the people who work in the academic world and in the non-profit atmosphere have kinder hearts by nature and thus the working environment is less hostile?
Or am I just lucky?
