Bitch!

Wednesday, March 09, 2005
Today, in History of Film class Hal Berry got us into an interesting discussion following viewing the Japanese Film Ran. This discussion lead to how women with power are viewed in America. The questions was asked "Why are women in positions of power considered bitches?".

As probably the only person with any substantial corporate experience in the classroom, I found their reactions great. They did point out that women and men do the same things to get into power, but a woman is considered a bitch for the same behavior that a man would receive a pat on the back. Someone also brought up how women make it worse for women, that they are there worst supporters. I have worked with women who have said "I won't work for a woman.".

As a member of the WPC (Women's Political Caucus), I see first hand the benefit of women helping women attain power, albeit in the political arena. Why can't women see that in all aspects of life?

I have had some asses for bosses, men and women. Gender hasn't affect my opinion one way or the other--either your great or your not so great. In my current jobs, I couldn't apply the "b label" to any. At the hospital, my two female bosses have the right application of "bitchiness": they use it on their departments behalf, not directed at their department.

At BABW, I think the two female supervisors could use some "bitchiness". They are such doormats and let the workers take advantage of them. That's fine, but when you drag down the other employees to be stomped on to--that's a problem.

I wondered if the difference was working outside of the corporate sector? Do the people who work in the academic world and in the non-profit atmosphere have kinder hearts by nature and thus the working environment is less hostile?

Or am I just lucky?
