Helicopter Parenting
Thursday, June 26, 2008
I've heard of this phenomenon. I've also witnessed it on a small scale. However, today at the pool was totally ridiculous. I took Zoey and Shelby to their swim lessons. I sat near the edge of the pool, feet propped up, reading a book. Other parents were standing right above their kids in the class monitoring every move. They looked at me like "how irresponsible of you to sit reading a book, laughing out loud, and not paying any attention to your charges.".
Heck, these girls can swim. They are taking lessons to learn proper form. Heck, Zoey's been jumping off the diving board since she was three!
I am not sure what had me laughing more. My book by Chelsea Handler or watching these "helicoptered" kids crying before jumping off the diving board, followed by Zoey doing a perfect dive.

One of my fave authors will be here Monday!

Sponsored by Left Bank Books!

Barbara Ehrenreich - This Land is Their Land
Location: Ethical Society of St. Louis, 9001 Clayton, St. Louis, MO 63117
Bestselling author, journalist and cultural historian Barbara Ehrenreich - Nickel and Dimed and Bait and Switch - has consistently and effectively been a champion for the poor and the middle class. Through a compilation of essays and blog entries on a myriad of issues including health care, employment, stem cells and finances, This Land Is Their Land provides readers with cutting and provacative social commentary on the Bush years. As Ehrenreich says, "The looting of America has gone on too long, and the average American is too maxed out, overworked and overspent to have anything left to take. We need a new deal, a new distribution of power and wealth, if we want to restore the beautiful idea that was 'America.'" Books for signing must be purchased from Left Bank Books or at the event.

The Onion Movie
Saturday, June 21, 2008
I didn't even know there was an Onion movie. But, I came across this in Blockbuster on Thursday evening. Like The Onion, not all stories are going to be a hit with all people. However, I found about 80% of it hysterical.
The other good thing about this movie is that even if you are in a sketch you are not enjoying it will take a left turn out of nowhere into something you may enjoy more.
Note, it has a lot of profanity so I couldn't watch it at job#3. However, I am watching it in the computer lab today (headphones) and getting many weird look from students as I break out into giggles, chuckles, and bursts of laughter.
If you like The Onion, you may want to check it out.
