What is your favorite color?
Sunday, February 19, 2006
As a kindergartner, Shelby seems to be defining herself in the silly ways we do as young folk. On Friday, she couldn't let me know enough that blue was her favorite color. She was excited about some paint because it was blue. She pointed out that my glasses were also in her favorite color. Her group of friends at school also mostly love blue also. She probably would have even wanted her dinner in blue--but how many blue foods are there?
Which made me think: what does your favorite color really say about you? Have any studies been done that relate to this weirdness?
I work with a guy who's favorite color was listed as teal. Teal--that's pretty specific. And also weird for a guy to be that color conscious.
I would think that pink is my favorite color. I love, love, love it. I love pink clothes, pink books, and I really, really wish my faux fur coat was pink. However, in the past when someone asks me my favorite when I am not overthinking it I would say blue. So, psychologist-couch wise, blue would be considered my favorite. I can see that--my birthstone is sapphire. My favorite crayon when I was a kid was cornflower--a pretty shade of blue.
In reality, my favorite color depends on the topic. My favorite color for an automobile is red. Pink isn't really a color I would use in decorating my home (although my kitchen is pink and green). I wouldn't go out and buy a pink sofa.
The next time someone asks, I might say my favorite color is "depends" and use the above rationale. Otherwise, does it really matter. Or, does our favorite color say something about us?
