Superman as Jesus Christ

Sunday, August 01, 2004
Occasionally I will catch the Christopher Reeve movie Superman on television. I always stop and watch this movie and recall my first experience seeing this film. It was at Village Square when it not only existed but was also still a first run movie house. At the time they just had one big screen in the theatre and it was packed for Superman. I remember my father and I going to see this (we both love comic book/super hero type movies) and being awed by the special effects.
Looking back and watching this current day, the special effects seem so dated---which I guess they are.
Last night this movie was on AMC or TCM, one of those old movie channels. And this time I had such an ephiphany of how this story in a way mirrored the Gospels. Kal-El (Superman) is sent to earth by his father, knowing he could be a savior in trying times. We see briefly Kal-El as a young child, just arriving on earth. Then we know a bit of his teen years (Jesus at the Temple episode dialoging with the temple scholars) before a complete disappearance for many years. Both emerge in their late 20's/early 30's to take on their role as "savior".

Just something to think about...maybe one day I can go deeper into this and write a paper on this subject.

Funny aside: If Superman is Jesus, is Wonder Woman actually a Mary Magdalene type? Or is it Lois Lane?
