Antiquities and the Iraq Wars
Thursday, September 09, 2004
Today in Western Civ we were discussing Mesopotamia and other cultural aspects of that area. We were watching a video of some of the first signs of civilization. I swear the teacher stopped the film ten times to say things like "Well, that's no longer there we bombed it to pieces in the first Iraqi War" or "Gosh, we blew that up last year".
Regardless of you feelings on the war, it amazes me that these items have been around for thousands and thousands of years yet we manage to destroy these pieces from the foundation of our culture.
And this isn't just the "cost of war". Iraq was at war with Iran for almost a decade without losing any of these treasures. The US just didn't seem to care.
